Laminated glass is another option used when safety glass is required. It can be manufactured using glass that is annealed, heat strengthened or tempered and can be made up using different glass types including: tinted, reflective, patterned, and or mirror. Laminated glass is produced by bonding layers of glass together under pressure and heat, with a layer of film, called the interlayer, in between them. The interlayer absorbs the energy impact and allows the sheet as a whole to flex and bend. Although the glass may break, the glass fragments remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, minimizing the risk of injuries and or provide resistance to the passage of persons or objects.
Laminated glass is a top spec safety glass and has a variety of uses. It is normally used where there is a possibility of human contact or where the glass could fall if shattered or to guard against a volume of weaponry and ammunition. For example – car window screen, balcony balustrades, entrance doors, cashier windows, and more. Laminated glass can also be used to increase the sound insulation rating of a window, where it significantly improves sound attenuation compared to unlaminated glass panes of the same thickness. For this purpose, a special “acoustic PVB” is used for the interlayer. An additional property of laminated glass for windows is that a PVB interlayer can block ultraviolet radiation. Resulting in the glass obtaining a better UV value.
