Aluminum window border with gril double glazing Casement windows for Villa Gym Kitchen

Casement windows are a category of windows all of which hang vertically and open or swing out from the sides. Casement windows are commonly found in residential properties, especially houses. There are many window parts that play into the functionality of a window. When you shop for casement window parts you may need to match the colour or even the handedness of your window, depending on whether they open left or right.

Product Description

A casement window is an example of an operable window. In contrast to a fixed window, operable windows move in a variety of ways based on the window’s style. They provide airflow and ventilation, as well as an alternative means of escape in case of an emergency.

Traditionally, casement style windows swing outward like a door. They are attached to the window frame by one or more hinges on the side and can have upwards of five to six sashes in some cases. That said, many companies will also simply join casement windows together, resulting in big, bulky mullions (the vertical bars that separate the different panes of glass in a window). Homeowners should not mistake these combination windows for a single casement window with multiple sashes.

Typically, casement windows open and shut by means of a crank located at the bottom of the frame. When closed, locking mechanisms on the frame pull the sash up against the frame and lock it into position. These windows can be hinged to open outward or inward and are excellent for natural ventilation. If you live in a hot climate, casement windows are an ideal option to encourage airflow.

Whereas a single casement window contains one sash contained within the frame, a proper double casement window contains two separate sashes within the frame that can swing out independently of each other.

How do casement windows compare to other windows?

Other types of window include: sash windows, sliding windows, gable windows and bay windows. The main difference between types of windows is how they open, how they look and what type of space (known as an aperture) they fit into.

Casement windows vs sash windows (sometimes called double hung windows)

Casement windows vary in opening mechanism when compared with sash windows. Sash windows comprise of two window pane units  – one pane will slide down over the other to open the window. Normally the lower pane slides up and down, sometimes both panes move up and down.

Casement windows open in or out on a hinge.

Casement windows vs sliding windows

Sliding windows are similar to sash windows in that panes of glass slide over each other, but the term sliding window is normally reserved for windows that slide sideways rather than up and down. Some people call sash windows sliding windows.
